Best Neighborhoods in Chesapeake, VA

Jon Fesmire | June 18, 2021 @ 12:00 AM

The third largest city in Virginia, Chesapeake has a population of 232,000. However, if you think it’s all urban and suburban areas, you’d be mistaken. Much of Chesapeake is made up of urban farmlands along with some wetlands and forested areas.

Much of the city has a sparse urban feel, but some areas are positively rural. Summers get warm, up into the 90s during the day and 70s at night, and winters get pretty cold, in the 50s during the day and the 30s at night.

If you’d like to live in Chesapeake, here are five excellent neighborhoods to consider.

Great Bridge East

Great Bridge East stretches from Battlefield Blvd to US 168, so it’s easy to get on the freeway and go where you need to quickly. This large neighborhood of 17,000 residents has a sparse suburban feel. The homes are beautiful, with slanted roofs and big, grassy yards, and there are plenty of trees along the roads.

Residents shop in nearby Hanbury Village and eat at restaurants like Hanaki Sushi, a Japanese Bistro, and Busky’s Chill and Grill. There are several public schools, including Southeastern Elementary School, Hickory Middle School, and Hickory High School.

The median home value in Great Bridge East is $320,000, and the median income is $96,000.

Pleasant Grove East

This is a large, rural neighborhood with a lot of space between homes and plenty of land if you buy a place here. The population is 6,558, and much of the area is farmland. In Pleasant Grove East, the median home value is $339,600 while the median income is $84,000.

Within this sizable area you’ll find Northwest River Park and Northwest River Natural Area Preserve. While the preserve is largely off-limits to people, you can camp at the park.

The schools for Pleasant Grove East are mostly in Great Bridge East, the ones we mentioned earlier are the closest to this neighborhood. However, children in this neighborhood will more likely attend Hickory Elementary School as opposed to Southeastern Elementary.

There’s plenty of shopping to the northeast, with stores like Target and restaurants like Cracker Barrel and Baba’s Pizzeria.

Butts Station

Just north of Pleasant Grove East is another spacious, rural neighborhood called Butts Station. You’ll find plenty of farmland here, along with trees, grass, greenery, and lots of shade. Naval Auxiliary Landing Field Fentress is found here, and part of that facility is the local fire station, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Fire & Emergency Services Station #29.

Locals enjoy golf at Battlefield Golf Club, a fun place to book a visit and play 18 holes.

Schools include Butts Road Primary School, Creeds Elementary School, Butts Road Intermediate School, and Mount Pleasant Christian School. Looking for a special place to eat? Head over to nearby Southland Restaurant and Catering or Three Amigos Mexican Restaurant.

The population here is 6,550, while the median home value is $315,900 and the median income is $103,654.

Deep Creek South

Another sparse suburban neighborhood you should check out is Deep Creek South. This area has a population of 10,900. The streets, while suburban, are spacious with plenty of green areas.

There’s plenty of shopping nearby. Just outside the neighborhood to the southeast is a Walmart Supercenter, a handful of fast-food restaurants, and more. If you want more of a diner experience, check out Bad Habits Wing and Oyster Bar or Busky’s Chill and Grill.

The neighborhood has several schools, including Grassfield Elementary School, Hugo A. Owens Middle School, and Grassfield High School.

The median home value here is $300,000 while the median income is $103,800.

Great Bridge

Great Bridge is a beautiful, sparse suburban neighborhood with tall trees and grassy lawns everywhere. To the north you’ll find the Elizabeth River where people go fishing, boating, swimming, and bird watching. US 165 cuts through the area, giving residents easy access to the rest of the city and beyond.

In the community you’ll find Chesapeake Golf Club with its 18 hold public course. Nearby is Tidewater Community College, an excellent place to study before moving on to a four year university. If you want some place special to eat, try Winston’s Raw Bar and Grill, a family friendly place with plenty of seafood, or Bad Habits Wings and Oyster Bar.

The population in this area is 24,500. The median home value is $304,000, while the median income is $88,000.
