Alanton
Though near shopping and city urban activities in Virginia Beach, Alanton, a neighborhood of about 6,000 residents, has a rural feel. Homes are spaced apart and there are tall trees everywhere. You may get the sense that you’re living in the middle of a forest.
It’s mostly families who live in Alanton, and the top-rated schools, public and private, reflect that. These include First Colonial High School, Alanton Elementary School, and Cape Henry Collegiate.
The neighborhood is mostly residential, though there’s a public pool at Alanton Baycliff Recreation. Just outside the immediate area, there are plenty of places to get your shopping done, and you’ll be just a short drive from the beach and all it has to offer. Because of the primarily residential nature of Alanton, you’ll find a few tourists here, making this a nice, quiet place to live.

Chesapeake Beach
Chesapeake Beach, also known as Chic’s Beach, is both a gorgeous beach and a comfortable neighborhood. You could see Chic’s Beach as the beach town in the beach city. The major shopping area is The Shops at Hilltop, a mall where you can get anything you need, including affordable groceries. Kempsville
Kempsville was originally called Kempe's Landing back in the 1600s, named after colonist George Kempe. Kempe’s Landing was a port where tobacco got shipped abroad. Now, the neighborhood has a population of 77,000 young professionals and families living an urban lifestyle.
The area is home to the Pembroke Mall, which includes a Fresh Market, Kohls, and Target, plus various specialty stores and restaurants. There’s also Mount Trashmore Park, a former landfill that is now a sports and recreation area, and the neighborhood hosts the annual Great American Indian Exposition & Pow-Wow, celebrating Native American cultures.

Lago Mar
This neighborhood of just 1,900 people gets its odd name, which in Spanish means Lake Ocean, from its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and Lake Tecumseh. This being a small neighborhood, there’s a real sense of community here. Crime is low and is mostly populated by families.
